Blue Origin Announces First Indian Space Tourist: Gopichand Thotakura
Indian Businessman Gopichand Thotakura Set to Become First Indian Space Tourist with Blue Origin
Earlier this month, Jeff Bezos-owned Blue Origin made headlines by announcing the six crew members who would be part of an upcoming commercial flight to space. Of particular interest to India is one participant, Gopichand Thotakura, an Indian businessman and pilot based in the United States.
While an official launch date has not been confirmed, a successful trip to space could potentially make Mr. Thotakura the first Indian in space since Rakesh Sharma, who achieved this feat in April 1984. In a recent media statement, Mr. Thotakura referred to himself as the “first civilian Indian astronaut,” citing his upcoming journey with Blue Origin as the defining factor.
The Blue Origin vehicle, New Shepard rocket (NS-25), is designed to climb to a height of 100 km above Earth’s surface, providing the crew with the experience of weightlessness and a view of the Earth’s curvature. This trip meets the criteria for a space journey, although the classification of astronauts has evolved over the years.
The United States’ Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) no longer designates space travelers as “astronauts” since 2021, following the rise of commercial space companies. Individuals who travel at least 50 miles above Earth’s surface in an FAA-approved launch are recognized as space travelers but do not receive commercial astronaut wings.
Mr. Thotakura’s selection for the Blue Origin flight signifies a significant milestone for India’s space exploration efforts. With plans for the Gaganyaan mission in 2025, where Indian Air Force pilots are expected to undertake a three-day mission in low-Earth orbit, the country is making strides in the field of space travel.
As Mr. Thotakura prepares for his historic journey, he remains focused on representing his Indian heritage in space and inspiring others to pursue their dreams. With the support of Blue Origin and his own determination, he is set to make history as the first Indian space tourist, showcasing the potential for India to become a pioneer in commercial space travel.
