Flying Fifty Hotel: A Unique Experience Rooted in Community History

The Flying Fifty Hotel, a unique boutique hotel in Cullman, Alabama, is set to open its doors this weekend, offering guests a one-of-a-kind experience rooted in the city’s history. The hotel, named after a group of 47 men who played a pivotal role in bringing economic prosperity to Cullman in the 1950s, aims to honor their legacy and the spirit of community that defined their actions.

During a time of economic hardship caused by a weevil outbreak, the Flying Fifty chartered a flight to Florida to convince King Edward Cigar to bring their factory to Cullman. Through community support and fundraising efforts, the factory was established, kickstarting the city’s industrial growth. The owners of the Flying Fifty Hotel, Paul and Challie Knetter, are dedicated to preserving this piece of history and ensuring that the contributions of these men are remembered and celebrated.

The hotel features seven themed suites, each highlighting a different aspect of Cullman’s history. From a steeple suite with views of seven churches to a founder’s suite honoring the Flying Fifty, guests can immerse themselves in the city’s rich heritage. The hotel will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Saturday, with tours of the property open to the public until 4 p.m. The first guest will be welcomed on May 17, with a family member of the original Flying Fifty in attendance to mark this special occasion.
