Penn College of Technology Students and Employees Provide Gourmet Dining at 150th Kentucky Derby

Penn College of Technology students and employees are gearing up for an exciting opportunity as they head to the 150th running of the Kentucky Derby on May 4. Twenty-six students from the college have been selected for internships during Derby Week, where they will provide gourmet dining to VIP spectators at Churchill Downs.

The students, mostly majoring in baking and culinary arts, will work behind the scenes in the kitchens, preparing food for Churchill Downs’ premium venues. Four students majoring in business administration will have the opportunity to serve guests in the front of the house, interacting with attendees.

This unique experience at the Kentucky Derby is highly anticipated by the students, as it provides them with connections and experiences that they cannot get anywhere else. The students will have the chance to work with literal tons of ingredients as they assist in cooking for the more than 150,000 guests who attend the Derby each year.

In addition to the exciting internship opportunity, Churchill Downs is also celebrating the 150th “Run for the Roses” by debuting a reimagined paddock. New venues such as the Woodford Reserve Paddock Club, Sport’s Illustrated’s “Club SI,” and the Spires Terrace & Suites will offer guests luxurious dining experiences and exclusive access to the event.

The students will be accompanied by Penn College instructors and staff, including Chef Charles R. Niedermyer, Chef Mike S. Dinan, and Brian D. Walton. This annual tradition of sending students to the Kentucky Derby has been ongoing since 1993, providing students with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be part of one of the most prestigious horse races in the world.

Overall, the students are excited to be part of such a historic event and are looking forward to the challenges and growth opportunities that await them at Churchill Downs.
