Montgomery County Board of Supervisors to Vote on Proposed Budget with Potential Real Estate Tax Increase
The Montgomery County Board of Supervisors in Christiansburg, Va. is set to vote on a controversial “proposed budget” on Monday, sparking outrage among residents over a potential increase in real estate taxes.
The proposed total budget stands at a hefty $255 million, with a significant portion of about $155 million allocated to Montgomery County schools for their operating budget. Additionally, the budget includes plans to add 6 full-time county positions, such as a multimedia specialist and volunteer coordinator, as well as a 5 percent raise for all county employees.
However, the funding for this proposed budget is causing concern among citizens, as it involves a raise in real estate taxes from 70 cents to 75 cents per $100 of the assessed value of homes in Montgomery County. This increase has left many residents worried about how they will afford basic necessities in the face of rising taxes.
At a recent meeting, residents had the opportunity to voice their opinions on the proposed real estate tax increase, with one speaker highlighting the financial strain many families are already facing. Montgomery County Administrator Angela Hill defended the budget, stating that the increase in taxes is necessary to address the needs of the growing community.
As the community awaits the Board of Supervisors’ decision on Monday, tensions are running high as residents grapple with the potential impact of the proposed budget on their wallets. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.
