NASCAR Team Owners Remain Unified as 2025 Cup Season Approaches

The 2025 NASCAR Cup season is quickly approaching, but there is still no agreement in place to extend the charter system that has been in place since 2016. Despite this uncertainty, Jimmie Johnson, co-owner of Legacy Motor Club, reassures fans that team owners remain a “unified group.”

The charter agreement, which guarantees teams certain financial payments, is set to expire after this season. Teams are pushing to make charters permanent, seeking additional revenue with a new media rights deal set to begin next season. Currently, tracks receive 65% of the media rights money, teams get 25%, and NASCAR receives 10%.

Team executives have voiced concerns about the current economic model, with Jeff Gordon, vice chairman of Hendrick Motorsports, expressing frustrations about the lack of a deal being reached. However, he remains optimistic that an agreement will be made.

NASCAR President Steve Phelps has acknowledged the need to close the gap between team owners and the organization, stating that there are still some details to work out. Despite the ongoing negotiations, Johnson remains confident that a resolution will be reached.

Speaking to the media at Texas Motor Speedway, Johnson emphasized the importance of unity among team owners in these negotiations. He praised the group for sticking together and delivering a consistent message throughout the process.

As the Cup Series races at the 1.5-mile speedway on Sunday afternoon, fans will be eagerly watching to see how these negotiations unfold and what the future holds for NASCAR teams. Stay tuned for updates as the 2025 season approaches.
