Squatters take over Gordon Ramsay’s London restaurant: What you need to know

Squatters have taken over one of Gordon Ramsay’s restaurants in London, causing a stir in the culinary world. At least six individuals are currently residing in York & Albany, a restaurant connected to the famous chef’s hotel in Camden Town. The squatters have gone as far as hanging a “legal warning” on the restaurant’s window, asserting their right to remain in the property.

Local authorities are aware of the situation and have stated that they will take action when appropriate. The Metropolitan Police in London confirmed that they were made aware of the squatters on April 10 in Regents Park, where the restaurant is located.

Photos obtained by news outlets show the legal warning taped to the restaurant’s door, signed by “The Occupiers.” The notice states that any attempt to enter the premises without permission is considered a criminal offense, as the squatters claim to have the right to occupy the property under the 2012 Legal Aid, Sentencing, and Punishment Offenders Act.

Despite Ramsay’s efforts to have the squatters removed, local authorities have deemed the issue a civil matter. While it remains unclear what the squatters intend to do with the space, two Instagram accounts have described it as a “new squatted community space” and an “autonomous cafe in the heart of Camden.”

Ramsay has been attached to the property since 2007, when it was leased to him on a 25-year term. The property was listed for sale in late 2023 with a guide price of £13 million. Representatives for Ramsay and York & Albany have not yet commented on the situation.

This incident adds to a series of stories about squatters making headlines this year, including a couple in New York City battling a squatter in their $2 million home and squatters living in a Beverly Hills mansion for five months before being evicted. The situation at Gordon Ramsay’s restaurant continues to unfold as authorities work to address the issue.
