Government Crackdown on Cryptocurrency Transactions in Canada: CRA to Receive More Information

The federal government in Canada is taking steps to crack down on potential tax cheats by introducing new measures to track cryptocurrency transactions. The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) will be given more power to penalize taxpayers who refuse to disclose information it wants.

In the budget tabled on Tuesday, Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland announced that starting in 2026, Canada will implement the Crypto-Asset Reporting Framework developed by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development. This framework will require crypto-asset service providers in Canada to begin annual reporting to the CRA.

Under the new provisions, crypto-asset service providers will have to disclose information on each customer and each crypto-asset transaction, including exchanges between crypto-assets and government-issued currencies, exchanges for other crypto-assets, and transfers of crypto-assets for purchases exceeding $50,000 US.

Additionally, the budget includes $51.6 million allocated to the CRA over five years to implement and administer the new reporting system. The government is also seeking feedback on whether crypto-backed assets are suitable as qualified investments for registered savings plans.

The budget also addresses the issue of tax planners who help clients engage in tax evasion and aggressive tax avoidance. Clients of these tax planners will now be held liable for all tax debt avoided, including any portion retained by the tax planner.

Furthermore, the CRA will receive more insight into donations to foreign charities registered in Canada. The time period for foreign charities to qualify for Canadian donations will be extended to three years, and they will be required to submit an annual return detailing the total amount of receipts issued to Canadian donors and how the funds were used.

Overall, these new measures aim to strengthen anti-avoidance laws and ensure a fair tax system in Canada. Critics welcome the government’s efforts to update tax information rules to include cryptocurrency transactions and hope that these changes will empower the CRA to go after tax cheats and win.

Red Lobster Considers Bankruptcy Filing Amid Financial Pressures: What You Need to Know

Is Red Lobster, the iconic seafood chain, on the brink of bankruptcy? According to a report by Bloomberg, the company is considering filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy to address financial pressures that have been weighing on the business.

The seafood restaurant chain, which has over 700 locations worldwide, is reportedly looking to renegotiate leases, address long-term contracts, and tackle rising labor costs. While discussions about restructuring are ongoing, no final decisions have been made about a potential bankruptcy filing.

Red Lobster has a rich history in Florida, where it was founded in 1968 by Bill Darden and Charley Woodsby. The company has changed hands multiple times over the years, with General Mills acquiring it in 1970 before it became an independent publicly traded company called Darden Restaurants. In 2014, Red Lobster was sold to Golden Gate Capital, and in 2021, Thai Union acquired full ownership of the chain.

Earlier this year, Thai Union announced its plans to exit its investment in Red Lobster, citing that the restaurant chain’s financial requirements no longer aligned with its capital allocation priorities. In response to these challenges, Red Lobster brought in Jonathan Tibus as its new CEO, known for his expertise in developing and implementing restructuring plans for underperforming businesses.

As Red Lobster navigates these financial difficulties, the future of the beloved seafood chain remains uncertain. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.

Investors Shouldn’t Worry About Higher Interest Rates: BMO’s Brian Belski’s Bullish Stance Supported by Four Charts

Investors need not worry about higher-for-longer interest rates, according to BMO’s Brian Belski. Despite the Federal Reserve signaling no imminent rate cuts, Belski remains bullish on the stock market. He noted that historically, stocks have performed well during periods of rising and elevated interest rates.

Belski’s stance is supported by four key charts that highlight the positive correlation between rising interest rates and stock market performance. The first chart shows that since 1990, the S&P 500 has delivered its highest annualized performance when the 10-year Treasury yield was above 6%. Currently, with the yield at 4.60%, the S&P 500 is expected to return 9.1%, outperforming the market’s average return of 7.7% when rates are below 4%.

The second chart reveals that the S&P 500 has historically performed better when interest rates were rising compared to when they were falling. Belski’s analysis shows that the average rolling one-year performance of the S&P 500 was more than double during periods of increasing rates.

Additionally, the third chart highlights that since 1990, there have been eight periods when interest rates were on the rise, and during each of those periods, stocks saw positive performance. This trend is further supported by the fourth chart, which shows that during each of the eight periods of rising interest rates since 1990, the S&P 500 posted positive performance.

Belski’s research suggests that investors should not fear higher rates, as they can be a positive backdrop for stocks. He argues that the near-zero interest rates following the 2008 financial crisis were abnormal, and a return to more normalized rates should not be a cause for concern. With historical data supporting the positive correlation between rising interest rates and stock market performance, investors can take comfort in Belski’s bullish stance on the market.

Global Elections in 2024: Impact on the Financial Industry and Geopolitical Landscape

The year 2024 is shaping up to be a pivotal year for global politics, with over 40 countries around the world set to hold elections that will have far-reaching implications for the financial industry. At the recent ifgs 2024 event in London, a panel of experts discussed the impact of these elections on the fintech sector and the broader economy.

With nearly half the world’s population heading to the polls, the outcomes of these elections will have significant economic, social, and geopolitical consequences in the years to come. The panel, moderated by journalist Edie Lush, featured insights from industry leaders such as Christopher Woolard, Iain Anderson, and Jessica Renier.

One key theme that emerged from the discussion was the increasing importance of geopolitical risk for businesses operating in the fintech space. Woolard highlighted the need for companies to navigate a more divisive global environment with nuance as they expand internationally. Renier echoed this sentiment, noting the shift towards protectionism and its potential impact on AI development.

In the UK, the panelists discussed the potential implications of a Labour government on the financial services sector, emphasizing the importance of policy certainty and predictability for businesses. Anderson highlighted the need for a dialogue between government and industry to manage economic risks effectively.

Looking ahead, the panelists identified upcoming elections in the EU, UK, India, and the US as key events to watch for their potential impact on the fintech industry. As countries around the world grapple with the challenges of regulating emerging technologies like AI, the need for a balanced approach to regulation becomes increasingly clear.

The use of AI to spread misinformation in the context of elections was also a major concern raised by the panelists, highlighting the need for robust regulatory frameworks to address this issue. As the world prepares for a wave of elections in 2024, the global banking industry will need to adapt to a rapidly changing geopolitical landscape to thrive in the years ahead.
