Sam Ash, Family-Owned Chain of Music Stores, Closing All Locations After 100 Years
After 100 years in business, the iconic family-owned chain of music stores, Sam Ash, has announced the closure of all its locations. Derek Ash, the company’s chief marketing officer and great-grandson of the founders, cited the rise of online shopping as the primary reason for the closure.
The company, which has 42 locations across several states, had previously announced the closure of 18 stores in March in an attempt to stay afloat. However, the increasing competition from online retailers ultimately led to the decision to close all stores by the end of July.
The news of the closure has saddened many musicians who have fond memories of visiting Sam Ash stores to purchase instruments and equipment or simply to try out different gear. The tactile and communal experience of browsing through instruments in-store is something that cannot be replicated online.
Renowned musicians like Michael Whalen and Steve Stevens have shared their memories of visiting Sam Ash stores over the years. Whalen recalled buying synthesizers and recording gear in the 1990s, while Stevens reminisced about purchasing a guitar that he played on a hit album.
The closure of Sam Ash stores marks the end of an era in New York City, where the company’s roots trace back to the early 1900s. Sam Ash, an immigrant from Austria, opened the first store in Brooklyn in 1924 with his wife, Rose, after pawning her engagement ring to make a down payment.
Despite the challenges of competing with online retailers, Sam Ash stores were known for providing customers with musician-caliber advice and equipment. Employees like Luis Infantas, who has worked for the company for 29 years, emphasized the unique experience of working at Sam Ash and interacting with famous customers like Stevie Wonder and James Gandolfini.
As the music industry continues to evolve, the closure of Sam Ash stores serves as a reminder of the changing landscape of retail and the lasting impact of a beloved institution on musicians and music enthusiasts alike.
