Four Chicago Businesses Recognized as “Locally Loved” During National Small Business Week
Four Chicago businesses were recently recognized as “locally loved” during National Small Business Week, earning a spot on Yelp’s prestigious Top 100 Local Businesses List. Chicago Pet Sitters, Windy City Wedding Dance, Rogers Park Provisions, and Play were all honored for their significant impact on their communities.
These businesses were selected based on their ability to shape community identities, fuel economies, and foster a sense of belonging among residents. Windy City Wedding Dance, a studio specializing in ballroom dance for newly engaged couples, was particularly thrilled with the recognition. “We stay connected with our students in a way I think no other big studio does,” said Amber Waggoner, the manager.
Rogers Park Provisions, a modern “general store” with locally curated provisions, was also elated to be recognized. “For all the hard work we put into a place like this, it’s so nice to be recognized, especially being a small business as we are,” said Maclin Schweger, the manager.
Play, a business with four locations throughout the city, emphasized the importance of supporting local businesses. “Small businesses are the fabric of a community. We bring culture and diversity and character and charm, all those things to the neighborhood that make it special,” said owner Ann Kienzle.
The Small Business Administration reports that the US is experiencing a “small business boom,” with more than 17 million new business applications filed since 2020. Illinois alone has seen 42,000 new businesses start in 2024, surpassing pre-pandemic levels. Small businesses, defined as having fewer than 500 employees, create two-thirds of the jobs in America.
National Small Business Week, running from April 28 to May 4, celebrates the contributions of small businesses to the economy and communities. It serves as a reminder of the importance of supporting local businesses and the impact they have on neighborhoods.
