Neighbors Suing Over Bitcoin Mining Noise Pollution in Arkansas

Residents in Bono, Arkansas, are dealing with a noisy neighbor that has disrupted their peaceful country living. Seven years ago, Gladys Anderson purchased her dream home in Bono to escape the noise and busyness of town, seeking peace and quiet. However, last May, that tranquility was shattered by the loud noise of 17,000 computer fans from a nearby bitcoin mining facility.

Neighbor Shane Markuson described the noise as a form of “military-grade torture,” affecting his hearing, blood pressure, and causing his partner to experience migraine headaches. Despite taking decibel readings as high as 82, the residents have been unable to find relief. Anderson has contacted officials, including the governor’s office, about the noise issue, suspecting that money is the reason for the lack of action.

The root of the problem lies in the “Right to Mine” bill passed by Arkansas, which prevents local communities from regulating bitcoin mining operations. State Senator Joshua Bryant, the bill’s chief sponsor, aimed to attract the industry to Arkansas due to its business-friendly environment. However, the unintended consequence has been noisy mining facilities disturbing residents.

Bitcoin miner Ben Smith explained that mining operations can be quiet if properly managed, cooled by water instead of fans, and located away from residential areas. The influx of noisy plants in Arkansas has been linked to Chinese companies with ties to the Chinese government. The bill itself was drafted by a bitcoin advocacy group, the Satoshi Action Fund, prompting similar bills in other states.

As the residents of Bono continue to fight against the disruptive noise, Anderson and her neighbors have resorted to legal action, setting up fundraisers to support their cause. While the mining plant’s lawyers claim to be working on enclosing the site to reduce noise, Anderson vows to be a persistent advocate for her community. The situation highlights the challenges of balancing economic development with quality of life for residents in rural areas.
